ABOUT CUB SCOUTS
BACKGROUND
Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting. Cub Scouts is a year-round family program designed for boys and girls who are in the kindergarten through the fifth grade (5 - 11 years of age). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting. Currently, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA’s three membership divisions (The others are Boy Scouting and Venturing). We have provided some information here, but you may also wish to visit Scouting.org for more information.

- Preparation for Boy Scouts
THE CUB SCOUT DENS
A group of about six to twelve boys or girls of the same age make up a Den. Dens meet several times a month to work together on various age appropriate activities as part of the Scouting Program. Lion Dens are for kindergarteners. Tiger Dens are for scouts in the first grade. Wolf Dens are scouts in the second grade. Bear Dens are for scouts in the third grade. Webelos are in the fourth grade while Arrow of Light scouts are in the fifth grade. The Dens usually meet on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 8:15 PM. The Den Leaders will normally schedule two or three weekly Den meetings a month. Some Den meetings are held offsite and can be considered mini field trips taken throughout the year. The Den Leader keeps records of each scout’s achievements and any field trips that the Den completes and turns these achievements in to the Advancement Chairman. They will receive their advancements or awards each month at the Pack Meeting, which is normally held on the last Friday of the month.
THE CUB SCOUT PACK
Combine all of the Dens an you have a Pack. The Pack meets once a month to celebrate the accomplishments of the individual members since the previous Pack Meeting and to allow the entire group to bond as members of Pack 483. Pack Meetings include games, songs, skits, refreshments, and special ceremonies and advancements that each Cub Scout earned during the previous month. One Pack Meeting a year is set aside for the Pinewood Derby and another for the Blue and Gold Banquet, which is a celebration of the birth of Scouting. THE PACK COMMITTEE
The Pack is run by a committee that meets once a month (usually the last Monday of the month). This committee helps plan the pack activities and votes on all matters concerning the pack. The committee is composed of Committee Chairman, Chaplain, Trainer, Secretary, Treasurer, Advancement Chair, Public Relations Chair, Membership Chair, Fundraising Committee Chair, Blue and Gold Committee Chair, Racing Committee Chair, Camping Committee Chair, and at least one committee representative from each Den. All parents are invited and encouraged to attend these meetings.
THE CHARTERED ORGANIZATION
Every Pack is owned by a chartered partner. Pack 483's Chartered Organization is Redeemer Church, located at 18218 Hwy 6, Manvel, TX. Redeemer provide us with a meeting place to hold our Den and Pack meetings, manages the unit and controls the program of activities to support our goals and objectives. As our Pack members are of a diversity of beliefs, children of all faiths are welcome to join.
At Redeemer Church, we believe that there is a greater life found through faith in Jesus Christ. It is our mission to connect all people to that life. On October 16, 2016 Redeemer Church opened its doors with a vision to help people discover a greater life: a life that led to deeper friendships, built stronger families, and made a difference in the world. Since that day, so many people have come to find that life among the people of Redeemer Church and through a relationship with Jesus Christ. If you are wanting more, we hope that you will come discover a greater life here.

THE DISTRICT
The district is a geographical area that includes many Packs like ours. Our district is named Thunderbird District and includes the area that is served by Alvin ISD, Angleton ISD, and Danbury ISD. Several times a year events will occur where we will have a chance to attend activities with these other Packs. One paid, professional Scout Leader oversees the operation of Thunderbird District while relying on the help of other adult volunteer leaders.
THE COUNCIL
The council is a larger geographical area that is made up of many districts. Our council is called Bay Area Council and it has its offices in Galveston, TX. There are currently four districts in our council. The council has a handful of paid staff to provide support to all the Scouts. It runs a Scout Shop out of its offices and operates our Scout camp. Camp Karankawa is located a few miles outside of Sweeny close to West Columbia and is less than a one-hour drive away.
